★ The Brief

What happened

Matthew Moroun, the billionaire whose family owns the Ambassador Bridge linking Detroit and Windsor, Ontario, donated $1 million to MAGA Inc. in January 2026 — his largest federal political donation on record. Weeks later he met Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick to argue against the government-backed Gordie Howe Bridge, a new public crossing that competes directly with his family's toll bridge.

Deal or steal?

Trump later threatened to block the rival bridge's opening to punish Canada — the very outcome that would protect the Moroun family's toll-bridge monopoly on that stretch of the border.

On January 16, 2026, Matthew Moroun — the Detroit-based billionaire whose family has operated the Ambassador Bridge between Detroit and Windsor, Ontario for decades — donated $1 million to MAGA Inc., a super PAC devoted to President Trump. The donation, documented in a campaign finance report filed February 20, 2026, was the largest federal political donation on record by Moroun. It preceded by less than one month a February 9 meeting in Washington between Moroun and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, at which Moroun lobbied against the competing Gordie Howe Bridge. Moroun's company, the Detroit International Bridge Company, also paid $250,000 in the second half of 2025 to the lobbying firm of Brian Ballard, a top Trump fundraiser, to lobby on issues related to international bridges.
