What happened
On February 14, 2025, Trump signed Executive Order 14213 establishing an interagency council under Interior Secretary Doug Burgum (chair) and Energy Secretary Chris Wright (vice chair) to coordinate federal policy on oil, gas, coal, nuclear, hydropower, and critical minerals.

Deal or steal?
Both chairs came from outside government: Interior Secretary Doug Burgum had governed oil-producing North Dakota, and Energy Secretary Chris Wright had run oilfield-services firm Liberty Energy before his nomination. Trump signed this order the same day Wright issued the first post-pause LNG export license.
Executive Order 14213, signed by President Trump in the Oval Office on February 14, 2025, establishes the National Energy Dominance Council — an interagency body chaired by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum with Energy Secretary Chris Wright as vice chair. The order names the Secretaries of State, Treasury, Defense, Agriculture, Commerce, and Transportation; the Attorney General; the EPA Administrator; the OMB Director; the U.S. Trade Representative; the Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy; and the Assistants to the President for Economic Policy, National Security Affairs, and Domestic Policy as members, alongside the chairs of the Council on Environmental Quality and Council of Economic Advisers and the Director of the Office of Science and Technology Policy. The council's stated mandate is to advise the president on maximizing domestic energy production — across oil, gas, coal, nuclear, hydropower, and critical minerals — and to coordinate regulatory streamlining and private-investment incentives across the administration. Trump signed the order the same day Energy Secretary Wright issued the first post-pause LNG export approval to Commonwealth LNG.
